MicroCode, I have a few questions to ask. Just to understand things a little clearer. Does this problem happen in just xfce? how is openbox and i3? Is this a new install or you took an update, then the problem started? I tried to replicate this problem, with an older radeon card, and I had no issues...

Arch linux has ended support for 32bit (i686). Archmerge and ArchMergeD is based on arch linux, so there is only 64 bit versions

you could also try to Install the linux-lts kernel 4.9.66 and boot from that one, just to rule out possible kernel problem, since 4.14.3 is a brand new one.

I also noticed today, there was also a linux-firmware update as well, could also be the culprit

A common set of mount options for ntfs is uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022. This sets you as the owner of the drive, and sets the directory permissions to 755 and file permissions to 644. Just in case you can check your user id and group id, by opening a terminal and typing id -u for the user id (uid) id...
