[CLOSED] Variety does not have permissions to delete wallpapers

Post by adarco » Thu Jul 19, 2018 9:13 pm

If you have your home folder encrypted, you will get this error when pressing ALT+T to delete the current picture and get a new one from Variety.

As you can read from https://answers.launchpad.net/variety/+faq/2271 it says down there:

"If your home is encrypted: Using superuser priviliges, grant yourself write access to /usr/share/backgrounds, and set Variety to place the wallpapers there."

So, the solution is to grant the directory the permissions is like this, and should be done on your favorite terminal.

Code: Select all

cd /usr/share/backgrounds
stat -c %a arcolinux/
sudo chmod -R 777 arcolinux/
stat -c %a arcolinux/
Now you can press ALT+T to delete the current image and download a new one.
Pretty funny stuff.

The link you provide is NOT correct. That is about lightdm.

It is quite normal and ok that you can not delete the wallpapers from /usr/share/wallpapers.

They are controlled by Pacman.

I would not recommend your solution to anyone. I was even thinking of deleting this post as it might result in problems for some beginners in Linux if they type something wrong here.

The normal procedure is to stay off from anything else that is not your Home folder.
