[SOLVED] ArcoLinuxD video failure on VirtualBox

Post by MrCush » Sun Oct 21, 2018 12:18 pm

I decided I wanted to run through these phases and get a much better understanding with Arch and the fact that you had an i3wm version of ArcoLinuxD :D

So, install ran completely fine, reboot straight into desktop. Woot! Then I decide to take the VM to full screen mode (I've never used a VM before) and when I do this I realize that it was giving me black bars at the bottom and top so it really wasn't giving me the true full screen I thought I would get. So I saw in the video of logging out and the resolution would adjust and decided to give that a try. Didn't work and then I realized that maybe it was because I had both my monitors on. Turn off my second monitor and log out again and boom. Login wallpaper image went out of whack and there was no spot for me to login as the text boxes weren't there anymore. So I decide to reboot it, aaaand BLSOD (black screen of death?). I realize if I super+enter, my cursor turns into text editing cursor, so everything is working in background and I'm just not getting any display. I tty out and back in and it gives me:

Code: Select all

starting version 239
/dev/sda1: recovering journal
/dev/sda1: clean, 672556/1387300 files, 2687600/5538620 blocks
[ 16.147459] [drm:vbox_bo_unpin [vboxvideo]] *ERROR* unpin bad 00000000e70405c1
I'm assuming I busted the video driver that works with the VM when messing with the resolution with multiple monitors? Powering down VM as well as restarting my physical PC didn't help. Searching google for a couple hours brought me to that solution and that I would need to remove the virtualbox_guest_dkms located in the /lib/modules area and then reinstall it? This is where I wasn't so sure and really didn't want to totally mess up this installation I spend several hours doing (you must have excellent internet or something for your YT video install to only last like 15min of the scripts). I went into the /lib/modules folder and did not see anything on virtualbox and then went into the modules-load.d folder and found a virtualbox config file however looking at the file, it doesn't seem like that would be it at all.

I was hoping I could get a second opinion on if I'm going in the right direction here and if so, if I'm doing the right thing. Some instruction on how to fix it would be great as well
I was SOOO happy to find out about this acrolinux project today because I've been working on my own archlinux and didn't understand half of what I was doing when i was installing and this all just seems like an incredible learning opportunity to get my hands dirty and come out way ahead of where I am now.

Thanks for any help!

Lets build the story up from scratch.

What did you start with? ArcoLinuxD version from sourceforge or Build it yourself?

Are you on Mac or pc? Using virtualbox or vmware?
Learn, have fun and enjoy.
But first use the power of the Arch Wiki
use the tutorials on https://www.youtube.com/erikdubois
then use the power of google
then use the power of our moderators.

I started VirtualBox, created a new virtual machine with:
Type: Linux
Version: Arch Linux 64 bit
Memory Size: 8192 MB
Virtual Hard Disk: VDI - Dynamically Allocated w/ 30GB
Processors: 4

I then started that VM and chose the ArcoLinuxD iso.

Code: Select all

mirror
update
pksyua
git clone https://github.com/arcolinuxd/arco-i3
cd arco-i3
./000-use-all-cores-makepkg-conf-v2.sh
./100-display-manager-and-desktop-v1.sh
./110-install-sound-v3.sh
./120-bluetooth-v2.sh.sh
./130-install-printers-v3.sh
./140-install-samba-v3.sh
./150-install-network-discovery-v3.sh
./200-software-arch-linux-repo-v2.sh
./200-software-arch-linux-repo-v2.sh
./300-software-AUR-repo-v1.sh
./400-software-arch-linux-repo-distro-specific-v1.sh
./500-software-AUR-repo-distro-specific-v1.sh
./600-software-from-ArcoLinux-repo-v1.sh
./700-installing-fonts-v2.sh
./800-autologin-v3.sh
./900-fix-microcode-error-v1.sh
./910-fix-mouse-cursor-breeze-snow-v1.sh
sudo reboot
I then booted into ArcoLinuxD-i3.
I turned VM into full screen mode
Super+Shift+e
I then clicked on "exit i3"
It brought me to a login menu
I logged in
I turned off my second monitor
I logged out again with super+shift+e
The wallpaper background for the login screen was out of wack
There was no spot to log onto that asked for my username and password
I reboot into a black screen
Click Ctrl+Alt+F2
Ctrl+Alt+F1
Error appears:

Code: Select all

starting version 239
/dev/sda1: recovering journal
/dev/sda1: clean, 672556/1387300 files, 2687600/5538620 blocks
[ 16.147459] [drm:vbox_bo_unpin [vboxvideo]] *ERROR* unpin bad 00000000e70405c1

Well.....I think I figured it out. I was watching your Phase 5 Arch Linux video on how to setup a VirtualBox and saw you increased the video memory. Once I did that....it worked. I appreciate your wonderful site, articles, and videos. I apologize for the long posts that you had to read through when in the end it was something as simple as that.

Thanks!

Done reading... great that you figured it out.
I would not have thought of the memory set in vb.

Ya, makes sense now that I think about it since the wallpaper on the regular desktop was just a grey screen. Must not of had enough vram to render it. Then the wallpaper in the login screen crashed it. At least that's what I'm assuming. Thanks again.
