[CLOSED] Arcolinux installation cut short due to more than 4 partitions

Post by Orkeven » Wed Jun 26, 2019 10:53 pm

Hello

I am trying to install Arcolinux on a hdd that already has Linux Mint installed. With Calamares I tried to edit the partitions in order to move space around to create a new partition in which to install Arcolinux. Everything was set until I got an error during the installation about processes not being able to be performed (in summary).
I opened gparted and tried to mount the partitions without success. Then I tried to create a partition via the Disks utility app and was greeted with the message that "cannot create a new partition as there are already 4 partitions".
Please, is there any way to go around this?

It is a 500gb hard disk initially dual booted with Windows and Linux Mint.
/dev/sda1 ntfs 100.0 MiB
/dev/sda2 extended 49.6 GiB
/dev/sda5 swap 4.1 GiB
/dev/sda6 ext4 45.6 GiB
/dev/sda3 ntfs 158.2 GiB
/dev/sda4 ntfs 257.8 GiB

The 5 & 6 appear to be structured under sda2 in the tree going by what is displayed in Calamares. I moved space around on 5 & 6 and merged them to create a 63 GiB partition to install Arcolinux within.

There are rules when it comes to partitioning.

You can only have 4 primary partitions.
One of them needs to be an extenended partition. In that one you can have as many logical partitions as you want.

That is probably the issue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning

We tell people to buy this :

And then switch SSD.

Just a simple one partition per ssd and just one distro per ssd.

So much less frustration and so much more fun.

Ofcourse if you can afford it and if you have a desktop.
Learn, have fun and enjoy.
But first use the power of the Arch Wiki
use the tutorials on https://www.youtube.com/erikdubois
then use the power of google
