[OPEN] Constant freezing and segmentation faults

Machine config: HP envy: intel i7 8550, 32GB, 500GB SSD
I have been using Arco linux for about as good as 3 weeks now. I have faced regular freezing and crashing for atleast 2 to 3 times everyday. Plus a lot of segmentation fault Core dumped errors. I am pasting a gist of all the segfaults that i got.

https://gist.github.com/agatsoh/038b306 ... d4e10a2a49

https://gist.github.com/agatsoh/5c8276a ... 1235d798d8

I encountered segfaults in many softwares like chromium, atom, python3.7 and many more. (I should have captured the python core dump my bad) Sudden freezing also occurs quite often. Apart from this when I run Arco linux it runs so smooth. But I always know that a freeze is always around the corner.

I also switched to the linux-lts, linux-zen, linux-hardened and the issue seems to persist. I also am on the latest intel ucode. I would really be grateful if someone has a solution for this.
Thanks you very much.

I hope other people recognize this problem. Do not recognize it here on my hardware.

Next it happens... i do not know if you can give us an screenshot.
If you start the application via terminal. Can we learn something about that?
There are other reporting tools on Linux.
dmesg, journalctl, xsession-errors - anything to learn more

Hi!

You know there is an Archway installation.
Step by step insttall if there freeze your system then you know what causes this issue.
(driver,kernel,compton,etc)

I am loosely coming to the conclusion that xfce4 is the culprit here. When I was in a freeze sometime back, till it froze completely I was able to open up a terminal and do a

Code: Select all

ps -A
There I observed all the softwares that I opened were under the xfce4-panel process(ofcource because I opened them through it) and all were hanged. Like chromium, firefox, some IDE's, and i was getting segmentation faults when I tried to run anything through the terminal. But I was getting segmentation fault when I tried to go into the python3.7 interpreter as well.

In the past 2 days after your reply Erik. I tried to do things differently and open everything through the terminal. And so far everything is working fine. I opened all the browsers, all my IDE's etc everything through the terminal. I will keep monitoring this as a freeze can nevertheless occur later. I want to use journalctl, gdb and others to debug this. So i will keep everyone posted here.

It is a start...
What if...
You forgot about xfce and started using openbox or ...

Ok a few days of more usage since this post. And now segmented fault are gone and good old freezes are back. The screen freezes and there is no option but to hard reboot. This happens roughly once everyday. I dont start applications from xfce panel and start it using the Alt + F2.
The Caps Lock key starts blinking and the laptop becomes hot. Signs of kernel panic I guess.

The journalctl log of the last freeze

Edit: Latest freeze

Code: Select all

watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#7 stuck for 23s! [TaskSchedulerFo:3697]

Code: Select all

watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [panel-7-whisker:882]

dmesg command output

any thing else that would be needed for troubleshooting this thing I would be more than happy to provide.

Thank you so much for troubleshooting with me.

I noticed you mentioned the caps lock led flashing. With an HP Envy laptop this usually indicates a hardware failure. Most of the time it's signaling the cpu is overheating or a battery problem.

If it's a laptop you can try removing the battery and run only on ac power and see if it persists. and monitor cpu temp

Try to reset the machine by unplugging the laptop, remove the battery, and hold down the power button for 15 secs, then put the battery back, plug in machine and see if it corrects itself.

Thanks for your help. I wanted to monitor the machine for more. Started using it for everyday things. The freezes started to get more distant like 6 days apart mostly because of me trying to run heavy software which must have increased CPU temperature and caused kernel panic. Just now I encountered 5 freezes back to back. The computer freezed, I powered off, restarted again freezed, I powered off. Happened like 5 times in a row in the span of 15 mins. I am attaching the journalctl logs. Mostly they are the same for the subsequent previous boots. When I print the logs on the console these things are highlighted in the red.
Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed

Here are the complete boot logs of the freezed boot.

Code: Select all

journalctl -keb -1

And what Operating System are you running now?
Based on what Iso?
