What alternatives are there besides the google giant?

Post by darknetmatrix » Sun Mar 10, 2019 12:24 pm

This topic is intended to share as many alternatives as possible without using the internet giant 'google'.
I kick off with my newest search engine and start page in firefox (also google free).

Sadly, google is now the enemy of the (poor) startup.
My alternative is duckduckgo which I use on my cell phones as well as on the machines here in the office.

Unfortunately, google is still needed to check the ranking of blog posts etc plus, they own YouTube which is another issue altogether.
Thanks for bringing up Qwant. I will give it a try. -v

If you use tails you will be forced to not use google at all. Honestly I gave up the fight, and am hoping for a political situation to this Orwellian surveillance.

Ecosia. A search engine that uses it's profits to plant trees.
https://www.ecosia.org/?c=en

Startpage. A search engine that strips your identifying information, encrypts it and proxies your traffic to google before returning the results to you. It does use google but it denies google the ability to harvest your data.
https://www.startpage.com/

DuckDuckGo. Most folk know this as a popular privacy focused search engine.
https://duckduckgo.com/

Swisscows. This is a very good search engine default for people who have children in the house as it has an always on content filter blocking out porn and violence which cannot be disabled. Obviously people with older kids are probably going to struggled against keeping that material out of their search results (so monitor your childrens internet usage and maybe use hblock or pihole to filter out such material) but for younger kids it would be ideal.

Searx. This is more of a tech savvy users search engine. Its search results are based on metadata and not so much keywords and trending usage. It is advertised as a hackable search engine that respects your privacy.

Yandex. Not much I can say about this. It's a russian based search engine that seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from google.
it's Russian, I wouldn't use it if you were concerned about privacy but if you just want to avoid using google then it seems to be a fair alternative. I would trust russians with my data over google anyway.

Not a search engine but if you want an alternative to youtube then bitchute is the way to go. A number of high profile youtube content creators are making the switch over to bitchute due to youtubes aggressive and one sided enforcement of policies (and in some cases non-policies)
